Stem cells have been used extensively for many proven indications like leukemias or genetic disorders like thalassaemia. There is a lot of evidence for stem cell therapy in blood disorders. Cord blood banking is also becoming popular in Malaysia due to the potential of stem cells. The stem cell is a potent cell capable of self-renewal and also differentiating into many different types of tissues.

Due to its potential, stem cell therapy has also been repurposed into newer indications as shown below:
Diabetes Mellitus: As of June 2020, more than 5000 studies have been published on PubMed.gov on stem cell therapy and diabetes mellitus. More than 200 studies have been launched to investigate the benefits of stem cell therapy and diabetes mellitus. Stem Cell Therapy: Update and Clinical Trials 2020

Image
Trying to keep up with the latest stem cell therapy evidence? There are more than 50,000 scientific publications published on "stem cell' on the National Library of Medicine. As of July 2020, more than 7,000 studies have been launched to investigate the potential of stem cell therapy under the U.S. Clinical Trial Registry.

Just on UC-MSC (umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells) alone, there was 178 registered clinical trials and 98 publications about cell therapy that employ UC-MSC, for the years 2007–2017.

Stem cell therapy has gained popularity as a promising treatment option for conditions where the current medical treatment protocols have been exhausted. However, there is also a lot of confusion due to the overwhelming mixing of credible scientific information and marketing hypes available on the internet.

Due to the fast-changing pace of research and technology, new evidence accumulates rapidly and clinical guidelines need to be periodically updated.

Is Stem Cell Legal in Malaysia?

Image
In order to answer the above question, we have extracted below the relevant information from The STAR and the Malaysian Guidelines for Stem Cell Research and Therapy 2009, so that you can understand and make a better informed decision.

Guidelines for Cell and Gene Therapy Products

According to The Star, Guidelines for cell and gene therapy products (CGTPs) issued by the Health Ministry will be enforced from 2021, says Dr Lee Boon Chye (Deputy Health Minister).

MACT (Malaysian Association for Cell Therapy) president Dr Lim Teck Onn said the effective use of stem cell for medical purposes was evidence-backed, but cell therapy might be controversial for aesthetic applications.

“The use of stem cell for genuine medical therapy has never really been an issue. There are data and proven trials and even US Food and Drug Administration-approved indications. The big problem however is its use in wellness, anti-aging and some beauty products. As an industry association, we have an obligation to …

Can Stem Cell Therapy Help against COVID-19?

Image
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been extensively investigated for the treatment of various diseases. The human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) have shown very good capability to modulate immune response and repair the injured tissue with good safety (Cell Mol Life Sci. 2020).

new pilot study which was a small study of 7 patients who were given 50-100 million, culture-expanded MSCs. 5/7 of the patients had severe COVID-19 cases and two just had viral pneumonia (common type). The two common type patients were recovered and discharged and the other four were listed as recovered but seem to have still been in the hospital at the time the paper was submitted. Three severe cases were recruited for the placebo group and the outcomes were that one died, one still was in respiratory distress (ARDS), and one was listed as stable. The treated patients showed a decrease in the inflammatory cytokine storm so prevalent in COVID-19.

Stem Cells and Coronavirus

Regenexx - This morning I was catching up on some emails from last week and one sent by a colleague was VERY concerning. A skin care clinic offering stem cell treatments for COVID-19! So let’s dig in…

Stem Cells and Coronavirus

There was a stem cell COVID-19 paper placed online last week that was not yet published nor peer-reviewed that I covered on this blog (1). It was an interesting case report of an elderly woman in Wuhan, China (the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak) who was on her death bed in the ICU. They gave her an infusion of culture-expanded MSCs derived from umbilical cords and she quickly recovered. In that blog, I made it VERY CLEAR that these cells were not available here in the US for clinical use. Why? I knew that chiro, cosmetic, and alternative health clinics would soon be offering COVID-19 treatments based on this paper and claiming that the dead cells they use are the same as the live cells used in this paper. Well, we’re there already!

Listing of Diseases Treated with Stem Cells: Parent's Guide to Cord Blood

Image
Diseases treated with cord blood can be divided into 2 categories:
Proven Standard TherapiesTherapies in Clinical Trials

Before choosing the right form of cord blood banking it is also important to distinguish between two modes of treatment:
Allogeneic - patient receives stem cells from a matching donor, either a sibling or an unrelated donorAutologous - patient receives their own stem cellsWhen parents donate cord blood to a public bank, they are supporting patients around the world who are searching for an unrelated Allogeneic donor. When parents save cord blood in a family bank, they are reserving the options that the baby can use its own stem cells for an Autologous treatment, or an immediate relative (sibling or parents) can use the stem cells for an Allogeneic treatment.

Standard Therapies with blood-forming stem cells

These are diseases for which transplants of blood-forming stem cells (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplants, HSCT) are a standard treatment. For some diseases they are…
